Tauranga, the largest town in the Bay of Plenty, is a port that serves the surrounding agricultural region. It's a fairly laid back place that becomes extremely busy in summer because of its temperate climate and beautiful beaches.
With more than 200 speciality retail outlets, Tauranga is a great place to shop. In the city centre, there is a wide variety of good food on offer in the many restaurants and cafes: Spanish, Thai, Indian, Mexican, Italian, Turkish or Japanese cuisine - whatever takes your fancy. The dining locations are as varied as the cuisines. Choose from award-winning fine dining in up-market restauarants, wood-fired gourmet pizzas at an outside dining area, and superb take-away fish and chips on the beach.
The clear waters surrounding Tauranga are perfect for ocean-based activities, including swimming with dolphins, diving, game fishing and surfing. The area features many first-class golf courses and there is whitewater rafting, jet boating and 4WD thrills for the adventurous. Alternatively, a relaxing time can be spent visiting a winery or soaking in either hot mineral spas or the unique hot saltwater pools.
